China's stock market capitalization topped Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the first time yesterday after the key stock index set a new record yesterday, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A- and B-shares listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, closed up 90.93 points or 1.95 pct at a record 4,754.10, while the Shenzhen Composite Index rose 1.51 pct to 1,348.88.
This brought the overall capitalization of the two bourses to 21.147 trln yuan, passing the 2006 GDP level of 21.087 trln yuan, Xinhua said.
