Less Americans Living Without Health Insurance

A new survey by the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention finds that just under 44 million Americans of all ages are living without health insurance, a number down more than 2 million from previous estimates.

The results of a new survey find that the number of Americans living without health insurance is on the down low.

Originally, it was believed that more than 45 million Americans lacked any form of health insurance coverage, but the recent study released by the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention finds that just under 44 million Americans have no health insurance coverage.

"In 2006, there were 43.6 million Americans of all ages who did not have health insurance (at the time of the interview), or 14.8 percent of the population," the CDC said in a statement.

The survey found that for the year of 2006, 54.5 million Americans of all ages did not have any health insurance for at least part of the year. "Among working-age Americans (those ages 18-64), there were 19.8 percent who did not have health insurance in 2006, a slight increase from 18.9 percent in 2005," the CDC added.

The CDC survey also found that 18% of poor adults currently under the age of 65, were enrolled in either Medicaid or Medicare.

"Almost one-third of children (32.3 percent) were covered by a public plan, compared with 12.4 percent of adults 18 to 64 years," the report said.
